Additional Credits and Payments
Every line is explained below in plain English — click any line to see what it means, who needs to fill it in, and what people commonly overlook.
Nonrefundable Credits
- 1 Foreign Tax Credit The credit for income taxes you paid or accrued to a foreign country or U.S. possession.
- 2 Child and Dependent Care Credit The credit for expenses you paid to a care provider so you (and your spouse, if filing jointly) could work or look for work.
- 3 Education Credits The nonrefundable portion of your education credits from Form 8863, line 19.
- 4 Retirement Savings Contributions Credit The Saver's Credit -- a credit for contributions you made to a traditional or Roth IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457, SIMPLE, or SEP plan.
- 5a Residential Clean Energy Credit A credit equal to 30% of the cost of qualified clean energy property you installed in your home.
- 5b Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit A credit for qualified energy-efficient improvements to your main home. The credit is 30% of costs, with an overall annual limit of $3,200.
- 6 Other Nonrefundable Credits The total of less common nonrefundable credits not listed separately on lines 1 through 5b.
- 7 Total Nonrefundable Credits The sum of all nonrefundable credits from Part I, lines 1 through 6. This total flows to Form 1040 line 20.
Other Payments and Refundable Credits
- 9 Net Premium Tax Credit The net premium tax credit from Form 8962.
- 10 Amount Paid with Extension Request The amount you sent to the IRS when you filed Form 4868 to request an automatic six-month extension.
- 11 Excess Social Security Tax Withheld A credit for Social Security tax withheld beyond the annual maximum when you worked for two or more employers.
- 12 Credit for Federal Tax on Fuels A refundable credit for federal excise tax you paid on fuel used for nontaxable purposes.
- 13z Other Payments or Refundable Credits The total of less common payments and refundable credits not listed separately on lines 9 through 12.
- 14 Total Other Payments and Refundable Credits The sum of all other payments and refundable credits from Part II, lines 9 through 13z.
- 15 Total Schedule 3 The grand total of Schedule 3: Part I line 7 (total nonrefundable credits) plus Part II line 14 (total other payments and refundable credits).
