9 — Total Income Updated for tax year 2025

What this line means

The sum of all your income from lines 1z through 8. This is your gross income before any adjustments, deductions, or credits. It includes wages, interest, dividends, retirement distributions, Social Security benefits (taxable portion), capital gains, and all additional income from Schedule 1. This is the starting point for calculating your tax.

Does this apply to you?

  • Every filer completes this line — it is a simple addition of all income lines above it
  • The number here is your total gross income before any deductions are applied
  • Tax software calculates this automatically from all income entries

Easy to overlook

Total income is not the same as AGI or taxable income Line 9 is just the beginning. Adjustments to income (line 10) reduce this to AGI on line 11a. Then deductions (line 14) reduce AGI to taxable income on line 15. Filers sometimes report line 9 as their “income” when asked by lenders, insurers, or government programs — but most programs actually want AGI (line 11a) or taxable income (line 15). 1 [SOURCE: IRS Form 1040 instructions — Line 9 computation]

A high total income does not always mean a high tax bill Total income includes items that get offset by adjustments and deductions. Self-employment income on line 8 is reduced by the self-employment tax deduction. Capital gains may be taxed at lower rates. The total income figure can look alarming before the rest of the return brings it down. 2 [SOURCE: General filing pattern — math errors on total income]

Watch out for this

Math errors on paper-filed returns. Line 9 requires adding seven or more lines together, and simple addition mistakes are one of the most common errors the IRS corrects. The IRS will fix the math and adjust your refund or balance due, but the correction delays processing. Tax software eliminates this error entirely.

  • Line 10 — Form 1040 — Adjustments to income; subtracted from line 9 to get AGI
  • Line 11a — Form 1040 — Adjusted gross income; line 9 minus line 10
  • Line 1z — Form 1040 — Total wages; the largest component of total income for most filers
