Moving Expenses
- 1 Transportation and Storage of Household Goods The cost of packing, crating, hauling, and storing your household goods and personal effects when you move to a new duty station.
- 2 Travel and Lodging The cost of traveling from your old home to your new home, including lodging along the way.
- 3 Total Moving Expenses The sum of lines 1 and 2 -- your total deductible moving expenses before subtracting any employer reimbursements.
Moving Expense Deduction
- 4 Employer Moving Reimbursements The total amount your employer -- the military -- paid or reimbursed you for moving expenses that was not included in Box 1 of your W-2.
- 5 Moving Expense Deduction Line 3 minus line 4 -- the amount of your moving costs that exceeded what the military reimbursed. This is your deductible moving expense.
